Donny B.U. initiated ICT Watch in 2002, a leading Indonesian ICT civil society organization that laid the foundation for responsible use of Internet through a nationwide campaign. This campaign forged a nation of informed citizens and subtly pre-empted the possibility of new government limits on free expression. He was awarded an Ashoka fellowship in 2012 for his social entrepreneur activities on online freedom of expression, cyber activism, and citizen journalism. He is co-founder of the Southeast Asia Freedom of Expression Network (SAFENet), the Indonesian Civil Society Organizations Network for Internet Governance (ID-CONFIG) and the Indonesia Internet Governance Forum (ID-IGF). As a new media lecturer at reputable private universities in Jakarta, he teaches cyber journalism, digital media, e-business, and communication technology development. He began his career as an ICT journalist in 2009 at Detikcom, the biggest online media source in Indonesia, and served the company as vice president until his resignation in 2011. He travels widely in Indonesia in order to share his ideas and experiences with various campus activists, civil societies groups, and communities.
