Dinah PoKempner is general counsel of Human Rights Watch, one of the largest global monitoring groups. Her work has taken her to Cambodia, the Republic of Korea, Vietnam, former Yugoslavia and elsewhere in documenting and analyzing compliance with international humanitarian law, war crimes and violations of civil and political rights. She has written on hate speech and freedom of expression, cyber-liberties, privacy, peacekeeping operations, international tribunals and research ethics, among other human rights topics, and oversees the organization’s positions on international law and policy. An alumna of the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Legal Advisor and a graduate of Yale University and Columbia University School of Law, Ms. PoKempner also teaches international human rights law at Columbia University and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
